Outline
This venue is a multi-purpose hall with approximately 5,000 seats. The problems for classical concerts are insufficient sound level, the lack of spatial impression in the under balcony area, insufficient reverberance, and insufficient lateral reflection. In order to achieve 1) increased early reflection, 2) increased sound level, 3) longer reverberation time, and 4) consistency throughout the sound field, the AFC system was configured with an early reflection control section – which serves to reinforce loudness, spaciousness, and warmth – and a reverberation control section, which serves to reinforce the reverberance and give acoustic uniformity throughout the hall. To give acoustic uniformity, microphones and speakers were positioned in each of the different spaces and, by means of an energy-exchange technique intended to connect each of these sound field electronically, improvements were made in the under-balcony area and 2nd floor. In addition, since the increase in sound level required to make up for the insufficient loudness is required stability of the system and the elimination of coloration. Regarding the distribution of Lf (Lateral fractions: the ratio between the early lateral sound and omni directional sound) and SPL in the orchestra floor, under-balcony and second floor areas, an increase in the Lf of 10 % or grater, and a rise in the average SPL of 3 dB were confirmed with the AFC. When the hall was empty the reverberation time was confirmed to be from 1.9 s with the AFC off to between 2.1 and 3.3 s with the AFC.
